National Pride

Today Jamaica had hoped to claim two easy gold medals, but tragedy struck the women’s relay team during the baton exchange between Sherone Simpson and Kerron Stewart who had lane violations. That did not dampen their country men’s spirit as they bolted to finish the relay in a world record time of 37.10.

I AM SO PROUD TO BE A JAMAICAN. I cannot contain myself up until now and I will be singing high praises for all our athletes who participated in the Beijing games (even those persons who just travelled with and to cheer on the team). Just to see the Jamaican flag being waved on international television, I am proud.

Congratulations to all our athletes. We representing – TO THE WORLD. “Wi likkle but we tallawah”. To all the Jamaican atheletes, I applaud everyone of you. You did Jamaica proud. Sometimes there are dissapointments but we are still shining. BIG UP THE “JAMAZING OLYMPIC TEAM” – JAMAICA TO THE WORLD.

Our men? Awesome!! Ladies of the 4×100 team, we are all as disappointed as you are but that’s life. We have accomplished much and that’s the way how things go sometimes. And we cannot be ungrateful. I’m especially proud of the way that the four of you have handled the disappointment. Class is class and you ladies have my undying respect. All credit to the Russians for completing a mistake-free run but we all know what you four could have accomplished. We are the greatest sprinting country in the world and I am now, always was and always will be, Proud To Be Jamaican!

I’m here with my eight year old daughter in New York who tells me she is a proud jamaican and celebrated with our great nation each and every time someone mentions Jamaica or see sees the Jamaican colours or flag. My supervisor American born of Jamaican parents says ‘WE’ when he talks of Jamaica like many others I know. The Caribbean communities (including Guyana) are well respected in all areas of American society, mainly for pride which we display on a daily basis often times making us the envy of the world. We have grown to prominance in a society that is dominated with media covarage that has made the world a level playing field and while other contries like the USA, Great Britain, Germany, Spain, France and Russia continues to lose their influence over the world, Jamaica, Trinadad & Tobago, Barbados, Cuba and other Caribbean Nations continues to use culture, family values and increasing economic strenght to show that WE are the new and growing WORLD POWER.

This poem is dedicated to the Jamaican Olympians that have so bejeweled the entire caribbean region. All of us that have watched this Olympics must know how difficult this is to have achieved. For all of the caribbean nations that have competed and presented themselves and their flags to this glorious world event – Beijing 2008 Olympics – you all have made us proud of you and we wish to embrace you all with our thanks. From New York, USA: We wish you all much future success in the coming years

  7. The Caribbean nations has provided some past Olympics under the banner of the British West Indies Federation – in the Rome Olympiad events of 1960. Both Jamaica and Barbados took home the Bronze Medal in the Mens 4×400m Relay. These Men two of which are: George Kerr of Jamaica and James (JIM) Wedderburn of Barbados. We should take this opportunity to also remember this victory of these great men. We should have pictures of all four men and have our children know of these historical achievers. Their are not in the HAll of Fame for the NOC, but we can still acknowledge them, so that these new athletes will as time go by not be forgotten and ignored years later.

  8. Dennis James says:
